The popularity of ridesharing services such as Uber has only increased in the past few years across the country, and ridesharing is particularly common in Southern California. Unfortunately, however, we get calls at the Ride App Attorneys all the time from victims of accidents involving these rideshare services, including Uber.
Uber accidents can occur in a variety of ways, and the leading causes include the following:
Speeding. As in all accidents involving motor vehicles, speeding is a leading cause of Uber accidents, and injuries sustained from such accidents can be more catastrophic or deadly because of the greater force of impact in a collision or crash.
Distracted Driving. Like all other drivers, Uber drivers can also find themselves distracted by engaging in things such as texting, talking on the phone, checking their GPS, and any other distracting activities that take their mind and eyes off the road.
Alcohol or Drugs. It is common knowledge and a fact that driving any vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs significantly impacts a driver’s ability to safely drive, and the outcome is often the driver causing an accident that results in serious injuries or even death.
Fatigue. A body needs rest, and even more so for those who must frequently drive, such as Uber drivers. Driving when the body is not fully rested or if the driver is sleepy is an accident waiting to happen. Statistics show that drowsy driving is just as dangerous as driving when intoxicated.
What To Do Following an Uber Accident
Make sure you are out of danger and if you are injured and can do so, call 911
If the police respond to the emergency call, get a copy of the police report
Get the Uber driver’s information, including their insurance policy carrier, driver’s license number, and any other relevant information.
Take photographs of the accident scene, including photographs of the license plates of the cars involved. If possible, take a video recording of the scene as well, capturing details that may help in determining which driver was at fault
You can also take contemporaneous notes as to what you saw happen before the accident to the extent you are able to remember or do so.
If there are witnesses to the accident, try, and get their information, especially their names and contact details. Do your best to ask them to help in making a statement as to what they saw happen.
Get medical attention as soon as possible, even if you do not believe you have serious injuries. Some injuries take time to manifest so it is best to be seen by a medical professional who can evaluate your situation to determine the extent of your injuries.
