    Drowsy Lyft Drivers in San Diego

    Rideshare Statistics from California 

    San Diego is the most expensive city in which to live in the United States. On that note, California has one of the largest economies in the world. Considering this, what does the rideshare industry look like in the Golden State? 

    • Analysis from the California Public Utilities Commission states that crashes involving rideshare vehicles are on the rise.
    • In the state of California, 30,000 rideshare operators are trained monthly to join the rideshare economy. 
    • More than 600 million miles were driven by California rideshare operators in a two-year period.
    • In a two-year period, rideshares in California created $1.6 billion in revenue. 
    • Rideshare operators drive over their passengers’ feet  times a year in California. This equates to about once a week.
    • About half of California’s rideshare trips cost less than $10. More than 30% of all rideshare rides in California are done between 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm. One-third of California rideshares are less than 3 miles. 

    Drowsy Driving Statistics 

    How common is it for a driver to be tired behind the wheel?

    • One in 25 drivers admits to falling completely asleep while driving.
    • The majority of drowsy driving accidents happen between midnight and 6:00 am.
    • People who snore are more likely to fall asleep at the wheel.
    • The most common drowsy driving crash involves a car with no passengers other than the driver inside running off the road.
    • Drowsy driving accidents happen most often on rural roads. 
    • The CDC studied 150,000 drivers and found that 4% of drivers admit to falling asleep behind the wheel in the past month. These same drivers were more likely to report that they had slept less than 6 hours on average per night. 
    • Almost half of drivers who admitted to falling asleep while driving said the trip they were on was less than one hour. 
    • About one-quarter of drivers report driving while being so exhausted that they struggle to keep their eyes open.

    Another Common Problem 

    In addition to being drowsy behind the wheel, any of the following behaviors are also common among rideshare drivers and are considered distracted driving

    • Smoking or vaping
    • Consuming food or drinks
    • Cell phone use while driving  
    • Reaching for something on the floor or in the back seat
    • Using the navigation system or radio
    • Spacing out
    • Applying make-up
